Best Season: Fall
NGC 7129 is a beautiful reflection nebula and young star-forming region located in the constellation Cepheus. It is sometimes nicknamed the Rosebud Nebula or Flower Bud Nebula because of its soft, curved structure and dusty surrounding clouds.
Unlike emission nebulae that glow strongly from ionized gas, NGC 7129 shines mostly by reflected starlight. Young stars embedded in the region illuminate nearby clouds of dust, causing the nebula to glow with a delicate bluish tone. The area also contains patches of darker dust that block background light, giving the scene a layered and textured appearance.
NGC 7129 lies approximately 3,300 light-years from Earth in a rich northern Milky Way region. NASA’s Spitzer observations describe it as a young stellar nursery containing around 130 young stars, with the nebula spanning roughly 10 light-years across.
This object is especially interesting because star formation is still active there. Studies of the region have identified young stellar objects, pre-main-sequence stars, and Herbig-Haro objects, which are small patches of glowing gas created when jets from newborn stars collide with surrounding material. One survey estimated the young cluster’s age at only a few million years, making it very young by astronomical standards.
NGC 7129 was discovered by William Herschel in 1794. Through a telescope, it is a faint and subtle object, but long-exposure astrophotography can reveal the dusty reflection nebula, embedded stars, and surrounding dark clouds.
For backyard astrophotographers, NGC 7129 is a rewarding but challenging target. It does not have the intense red glow of many hydrogen-rich nebulae, so broadband color data and careful processing are important. The reward is a subtle, dusty field that shows a young cluster of stars still emerging from the cloud that formed them.

Backyard Capture Notes
NGC 7129 is a great target for showing reflection nebulosity and dusty structure rather than bright emission glow. From suburban skies, the faint blue reflection areas and surrounding dark dust can be difficult to separate from the background, so good total exposure time and careful gradient control are important. Processing should be gentle enough to preserve the soft dusty texture while still bringing out the young stars embedded in the nebula.
